Coleridge，Ifeelmyselfmuchyourdebtorforthatspiritofconfidenceandfriendshipwhichdictatedyourlastletter.Mayyoursoulfindpeaceatlastinyourcottagelife!Ionlywishyouwerebutsettled.Docontinuetowritetome.Ireadyourletterswithmysister，andtheygiveusbothabundanceofdelight.Especiallytheypleaseustwo，whenyoutalkinareligiousstrain，—notbutweareoffendedoccasionallywithacertainfreedomofexpression，acertainairofmysticism，moreconsonanttotheconceitsofpaganphilosophy，thanconsistentwiththehumilityofgenuinepiety.Toinstancenowinyourlastletter—yousay，"itisbythepress[sic]，thatGodhathgivenfinitespiritsbothevilandgood（Isupposeyoumeansimplybadmenandgoodmen），aportionasitwereofHisOmnipresence!"Now，highasthehumanintellectparativelywillsoar，andwideasitsinfluence，malignorsalutary，canextend，istherenot，Coleridge，adistancebetweentheDivineMindandit，whichmakessuchlanguageblasphemy?Again，inyourfirstfineconsolatoryepistleyousay，"youareatemporarysharerinhumanmisery，thatyoumaybeaneternalpartakeroftheDivineNature."Whatmorethanthisdothosemensay，whoareforexaltingthemanChristJesusintothesecondpersonofanunknownTrinity，—men，whomyouorIscruplenottocallidolaters?Man，fullofimperfections，atbest，andsubjecttowantswhichmomentarilyremindhimofdependence;man，aweakandignorantbeing，"servile"fromhisbirth"toalltheskieyinfluences，"witheyessometimesopentodiscerntherightpath，butaheadgenerallytoodizzytopursueit;man，intheprideofspeculation，forgettinghisnature，andhailinginhimselfthefutureGod，mustmaketheangelslaugh.Benotangrywithme，Coleridge;Iwishnottocavil;IknowIcannotinstructyou;IonlywishtoremindyouofthathumilitywhichbestbeeththeChristiancharacter.God，intheNewTestament（ourbestguide），isrepresentedtousinthekind，condescending，amiable，familiarlightofaparent:andinmypoormindtisbestforussotoconsiderofHim，asourheavenlyFather，andourbestFriend，withoutindulgingtooboldconceptionsofHisnature.Letuslearntothinkhumblyofourselves，andrejoiceintheappellationof"dearchildren，""brethren，"and"co-heirswithChristofthepromises，"seekingtoknownofurther.

[ItisinterestingtonoticethatwiththeselettersLambsuddenlyassumesagravity，independenceandsenseofauthoritythathithertohiscorrespondencehaslacked.Theresponsibilityofthehouseholdseemstohaveawakenedhisextraordinarymonsenseandfineunderstandingsenseofjustice.PreviouslyhehadventuredtocriticiseonlyColeridgesliteraryexercises;heplaceshisfingernowonconducttoo.

Coleridges"lastletter"hasnotbeenpreserved;butthe"firstfineconsolatoryepistle"isprintedabove.

ThislettercontainsthefirstmentionofCharlesLloyd（1775-1839），whowasafterwardstobeforawhilesointimatelyassociatedwithLamb.CharlesLloydwasthesonofaQuakerbankerofBirminghaHehadpublishedavolumeofpoemstheyearbeforeandhadmetColeridgewhenthatmagneticvisionaryhadvisitedBirminghamtosolicitsubscribersforTheWatchmanearlyin1796.ThepropositionthatLloydshouldlivewithColeridgeandbeeinawayhispupilwasagreedtobyhisparents，andinSeptemberheacpaniedthephilosophertoNetherStoweyadayorsoafterDavidHartleysbirth，alleagertobegindomesticationandtutelage.Lloydwasasensitive，delicateyouth，withanacutepowerofanalysisandconsiderablegraspofmetaphysicalideas.Noconnectioneverbeganmoreamiably.Hewas，Imightadd，byonlytwodaysLambsjunior.]
